A Very Merry Christmas from The White House Bed and Breakfast

We are just about to sign off until after the Christmas and New Year break and would like to wish all of our friends and the wonderful guests who have stayed with us since our opening in May a very merry Christmas.  The tree is up, the Christmas parties have started, the children are excited, but the nicest thing so far has been our very first visit to a bell ringing tower in Croscombe Church.

Towards the end of November we started, as a family, to attend bell ringing classes, a new after school activity at Wells Cathedral School.  The hobby already has us hooked, although it is much more difficult than you can imagine.  We aren’t yet good enough to be let loose on the bells alone, but yesterday we were invited to watch actual bell ringing in practice at a local Church.  The experience of climbing the very steep and narrow medieval staircase and hearing the bells from inside the tower was exhilarating.  The bells are extremely heavy and everyone worked so hard, so, when you hear those wonderful sounds over Christmas, spare a thought, and maybe a mince pie and something warming, for those wonderful bell ringers!

The White House is preparing for a very merry Christmas…..

The children have now finished school and my daughter and I spent a happy afternoon yesterday bottling the Sloe Gin and Plum Brandy we have been lovingly nurturing since picking the fruit in the Autumn.

At the time it seemed such a long time until Christmas but all of a sudden it is almost with us.

Of course Rod and I had to try them both out, and we still have the Blackberry Vodka to bottle so all set for a very merry Christmas…..

Christmas comes early to The White House

This morning came with a frost in The White House gardens and surrounding fields, bring an early Christmas feel to Dulcote following the recent mild weather.

This will be our second Christmas in Somerset and we haven’t yet experienced snow.  Think we are some way away from that possibility but we can always dream…….

Some of our guests who were with us at the weekend visited the Christmas market at Bath, whilst others visited the Christmas Festival in Cheddar.

All had a great time and it was a reminder of how good a location we are in with our base in Dulcote.  We are only an hour away from Bath and 20 minutes from Cheddar, making us the perfect place for exploring the South West of England.

Wells Reindeer Parade

My daughter and I took a stroll into Wells yesterday to see the Reindeer Parade.  We missed the event last year as we were frantically trying to complete renovations to the inside of The White House before Christmas and were keen to see it.

The streets were crowded with families and young children and the atmosphere was festive.  The town crier was in attendance with local dignitaries in a vintage car; a local brass band played carols; and they were followed by Santa pulled by his Reindeers.

Market traders were selling street food and it put everyone in the mood for Christmas.

We’ll definitely be going back next year!
